Abstract: This essay stresses the contribution of the female writers in the South of France to the literary and cultural rebirth in Occitany in the 19th Century. This analysis focuses on their written production, their contribution to the graphic normalisation of their language, as well as the promotion of the Occitan culture. As a starting point, the study deals with the historical events happening in France in the 19th Century, and the first actions of the feminist groups, who were responsible for the change in the social and legal order that had been established for women. By using a perspective which relates the Occitan literary movement to its socio-political context, the author establishes the causes that directly influence the female literature and above all the publication of their works. The study of the literary production of the Occitan female writers is connected to the key periods of the rebirth of the arts in the Occitan language. From the first authors in the 18th Century, such as Fabre d´Olivet, to the different socio-linguistic and literary manifestations in the 19th Century, as well as the working-class poets in Marseille, or the Felibrige, the literary journey ends up by analising the further split of a literary movement which had its highest representation with Frederi Mistral.
