ABSTRACT
In Sand’s writings, freedom is not only interpreted as the externalisation of taste and aesthetic sense, but is also presented as an element that generates beauty in those who make use of it. The synthesis of George Sand’s cultural ideals, especially the legacy of the Enlightenment, amongst which this particular notion of freedom is found, contributed significantly to the creative process of revealing, and thus understanding, the numerous characters of the society of her times, and those of the historical period in which she set her works. This phenomenon is evident in Consuelo, since, while it cannot be considered as a feminist work per se, it fully deals with women’s attainment of moral, intellectual and political freedom, using to that end a latent spirit of creative will manifest through the beauty born of song and music. Across the analysis of the three volumes that constitute the literary work, the concept of beauty will be analysed, showing like that the vision that the authoress had of the above-mentioned aesthetic category in Consuelo's figure.
